This intensive, interactive course uses free hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software:

* Learn rainfall-runoff and flood routing with HEC-HMS

* Build, run, and animate 1D and 2D hydraulic models using HEC-RAS

Come find out what’s new in HEC-RAS 5.0.5 as we cover these powerful new features:

  • Variable time steps
  • New culvert options
  • Mesh refinement regions
  • Internal boundary conditions
  • Access faster computation speeds
  • And more!

Content:

Participants are able to build, run, and animate rainfall-runoff and one- and two-dimensional flood models from scratch by the end of the course. The course covers hydrology and hydraulics using freely downloadable HEC software. The course consists of 4 modules across 4 days. You can register for individual modules separately; the 1D HEC-RAS module is not a prerequisite for 2D.

Get a head start on the course by trying our “Making Middle Zealand” and “Flooding Hobbiton” exercises.

Watch our video introduction below, in which we have a little fun with HEC-RAS trying to replicate flow constrictions in sheep pens:

Please also fill in the hydraulic modelling survey to indicate your level of experience with other modelling programs to assist us in tailoring our courses to best suit experience levels. Certification of professional development hours are available to all attendees.

In light of the recent Kaikoura Earthquake, we have added an exciting case study in which you have one hour, working as a team from scratch, to use HEC-RAS to decide whether or not to send the order to evacuate downstream population centres after an earthquake-induced landslide dam blocks an upstream valley.
